Strategic Location of Malaysia Merchandise Center (MMC)
Yiwu City is located in the center of Zhejiang Province and can be reached through Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Beijing and Shanghai. It is a world renowned whole sale market city, covering an area of 2.6 million square meters with 60,000 booths and attracting over 200,000 customers daily. Yiwu is described as "the largest commodities wholesale market in the world". It is calculated that it will take a person (spending 8 hours a day) 3 months to cover the Commodities City.
The City is home to 100,000 manufacturers and some 6,000 general distributors and agents of famous brand. Over the last 20 years, Yiwu has emerged as one of the leading bases for light industrial products supply chain (distribution, price comparison, exhibition, information) as well as an important sourcing center. In 2006, the total trade volume of Yiwu China Commodities City reached 31.5 billion RMB Yuan (about US$4.2 billion). Sixty percent of the total trade volume is gained from export to more than 212 countries and regions. There are some 8,000 traders from the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, South Asia (from over 100 countries) resident in Yiwu. The UN Refugee Agency, Carrefour, the Chinese Foreign Ministry and other international giant purchasers have set up their Purchasing Information Center in Yiwu.
While in the past, Yiwu has concentrated on Chinese light industrial products for the global market, the City lately has attracted foreign countries to set up "special halls" for their medium and high quality products to target the Chinese markets. Yiwu is slowly re branding itself as global sourcing center for both Chinese and foreign goods. We are pleased that we have been given an opportunity to be part of the Yiwu Municipal Government's trade internationalization program.
